Information about GatorGradCare
What is the "Health Fee"?
The mandatory health fee (paid when your tuition is paid) includes professional office visits with the SHCC medical and nursing staff. Any charges incurred at the SHCC, including lab, x-ray, medications, casts, crutches, supplies, etc., or referrals to hospital emergency rooms are your financial responsibility.
Do I need Alternate Insurance?
The University and SHCC strongly encourage each student to investigate his or her insurance coverage. One option to consider is the University sponsored health insurance, offered through Aetna Student Health. For more information, go to the insurance company's web site Enrollment may be arranged within the first 30 days of a semester. The policy year begins on August 14 and terminates on the same date the next year. Other policies may be available specifically for international students. It is the student's responsibility to know the benefits and limitations of a selected plan. Our Insurance Office (352-392-1161, ext. 4377) will assist you in filing claims.
Students may prefer to continue with a health insurance plan already in effect for their family, or they may want to obtain a new policy of their own. Keep in mind that some plans do not cover services in geographical areas other than the home city. Or, the listed/acceptable providers may not include the Gainesville area. Ask your insurance company what coverage is provided for a student away from home. You may want to ask whether the pharmacy coverage will accept prescriptions written by a non-listed provider. If so, students can see one of our SHCC medical providers--an office visit which is covered by the mandatory Health Fee paid with tuition--and then take the Rx to the pharmacy used by the family insurance policy. This may save you money, especially if your family policy has a co-pay for an office visit to a listed provider in the community. It's a good example of how to use both the SHCC services and family insurance coverage. It's also more convenient for the student to visit SHCC than to travel to a provider in the community.
Does the SHCC take any specific Insurance Plan/Provider?
SHCC does not currently belong to any HMO network nor is it a provider for the state PPC Plan. Our pharmacy does not participate in any prescription plans, however pharmacy prices are comparable to community pharmacies.
Costs/Eligibility:
Effective August 2007, the health fee "equivalent" $150 per semester (Fall, Spring, or Summer C). Summer semesters A and B is $76 per semester. This entitles you to the same day services you had as a registered UF student paying a health fee.
*Please Note: Students are covered for care during break weeks on either side of the semester. Be sure to check the UF Calendar to see when break weeks begin and end.
Post Doctoral students are eligible for our services by paying the health fee.
Students who have graduated or are not taking classes are eligible for our services for up to two consecutive semesters from last enrollment by paying the health fee.
Spouses or domestic partners of students who meet the eligibility criteria above must also pay the health fee in order to receive services.
For International Students:
International students are required to have health insurance.
For more information, visit the Office for International Study located in Grinter Hall or at http://www.ufic.ufl.edu/iss.htm. Or, email mfraser@ufic.ufl.edu
Important Referral Information:
A referral from a Student Health Care Center provider is necessary. There are a few exceptions listed in the insurance brochure. New brochures can be found in the lobby of the infirmary.
Please consult the insurance brochure for benefit limitations on: Prescription drugs, Mental Health, Chiropractic Care, Ambulance, Dental Accidents, Elective Abortion, Anesthesiology, Assistant Surgeons and others.
Subject to pre-existing condition investigation: It is best if the student seeks these answers from the insurance company directly.
Domestic Partnership:
Spouses or domestic partners of students who meet the eligibility criteria above must also pay the health fee in order to receive services.
The SHCC recognizes domestic partnership. You may download a copy of the form and requirements, or pick up a copy at the Front Desk of the SHCC. You may want to have this form completed and notarized before you return to the SHCC. This information will be kept confidential and will not be used for any other purpose.
